Replaced Fuel Pressure Regulator on the Volvo 240 today.

Posted by hotcrowd on August 1, 2010

The original fuel pressure regulator on my Volvo 240 wagon finally failed. I tested the vacuum on the hose between the FRP and the intake manifold. It was a little below specification. Also I did a test for fuel leakage in the vacuum hose. I fitted a piece of clear vinyl tubing in place of the original rubber vaccuum hose. In the photo here you can see the discoloration in the clear tubing made by the gasoline. This test was done over the duration of 1 week. The engine was running richer than normal. This is why.
The new FPR works perfectly and gives great performance. Better idle, transition to accelerate, and more power throughout the rpm range. It pulls stronger, enough to really feel it. Accelerates quicker in traffic and cruises smoother. I’m very pleased with it. Bought the Fuel Pressure Regulator at the local Autozone.

Replacement was easy and took about 15 minutes. I loosened the two 10mm bolts holding the FPR to the bracket. Then, using a flathead screwdriver, loosened the hose clamp to the fuel hose. Last step, I pulled the Fuel Pressure Regulator out of its plug in the fuel injector rail and the rubber fuel hose. Be sure to catch the small amount of gasoline that flows out from the FPR when disconnecting it. I used blue shop towelettes. Before starting the engine, after installing the new FPR, turn the key to activate the fuel pumps and prime the FPR. The key can now be turned to start.
